Open Letter To Supposedly Educated Nigerians: There Is A Thin Line Between Commendation And Sycophancy. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

Dear Supposedly Educated Nigerians,
Permit me to talk to you on this subject matter that has been on my mind for a very long time, I strongly believe that no society can grow beyond the mentality of its supposedly educated class. I believe that if the educated class is liberated from the shackles and bondage of sycophancy and praise singing of its leadership, the supposedly uneducated class will consequently find its liberation.
As much as education grants the attainment of various academic degrees and accolades for various research works, it is, more importantly, a tool for freedom and liberation.  It is the key that opens and empowers the human mind with the ability to demand ones right and stay demanding until such demands are achieved. Education empowers individuals to know their responsibilities as members of a society and what is/are needed from them. It also helps to make citizens know the roles of the government in a society and what is needed from them.
However, governments are put in place to serve the people. They are set up to improve the standard of living of the people- to provide security of lives and properties and to make attainable with ease the basic essentials of life – food, clothing, and shelter. These are the responsibilities of the government which are enshrined in the laws that govern every society.

Election 2019: Failure Does Not Deserve Continuity By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

“This is not a time for continuity. Failure does not deserve continuity. Incompetence does not deserve continuity.”- General Muhammadu Buhari
On the buildup of the 2015 election, I and few friends gathered those- about 30 of us, in the administrative block of my office together, and conducted a mini-poll, on whether they would vote for the then president- Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, popularly known as GEJ, or against him. The outcome of the poll was absolutely against GEJ. I was not surprised about the outcome of the 2015 presidential election afterwards. Now, as the polity of the 2019 election heats up, Just last week again, we repeated the same thing- this time for President Muhammadu Buhari, and even extended the participants to those outside the administrative block, the outcome was against President Buhari`s re-election. If President Buhari`s name appears on the ballot paper come 2019, I won't be surprised about the outcome of the election.
The logic behind this is simple: the perception of people within your immediate environment on a particular issue within a given period- especially when the sample of people involved is reasonably diverse, tells you about the perception of the larger society on the same issue within that period.
Everywhere I go I sample people's perception of this government and their intention to either retain it or boot it outcome 2019. I must say that to a larger extent that the perception has largely been on the negative.

2019 And Beyond: Why The #RedCardMovement Is Important. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

The past rises before us like a dream and again we are in the great struggle for national life, the struggle to save our futures and that of the unborn generations from the hands of the incompetents and failures, in leadership positions. The time has come to work together irrespective of religion, region, ethnicity and political affiliation for the good of this country.
Nigerians, for far too long have suffered in their own land- a land bountifully blessed with all resources needed for excellence and greatness. Regrettably, incompetence, lack of good leadership characters and weak capacity, displayed by leaders have left us shattered and battered.
Our resources- human capital, natural and minerals resources, are not limited to pursue our dreams for a prosperous nation, but we have lived from hand to mouth, scrambling for the things we have in abundance because we have not taken the initiative to vote in leaders with the capacity, competence and character to lead.
However, when people stand up and take a stand, there is something beautiful and powerful about it: It sends the message that nothing will be done or achieved without their involvement, it sends a message that people are aggrieved at the slow pace of development in the society and that they frown in the strongest term against incompetence and bad governance.

This is exactly why the Red Card Movement, conceived by the well respected, Oby Ezekwesili- the former Nigerian minister of education, leader of the Bring Back Our Girls Campaign and former Vice President of World Bank, is important and everyone must key into it. The wrong notion that if it is not the Peoples Democratic Party- PDP, it must be the All Progressives Congress- APC must be killed. This notion has given room for incompetent leaders to thrive, brag and flourish, and has also availed them the undeserved opportunity to rule us endlessly. This abnormality is achieved when leaders with the capacity, competence and character to lead find it extremely difficult to emerge the flag-bearer of the two political parties- APC and PDP, which have dominated our political structures lately.
Fortunately, with the primary objectives of the Red Card Movement of ending the persistent and cyclical problem of bad leadership in politics and governance in Nigeria and to mobilize            Nigerians to secure their Voters Cards and vote to resoundingly reject politicians that lack the character, competence and capacity needed for leading our country, potential leaders with the right qualities will be confident of an equal opportunity to be elected based on their abilities- capacity, competence and character.
Focusing and limiting the political spectrum to the APC and PDP is one of the reasons why we have not realized that there are more than enough people in our society with the abilities to take our nation to a well-deserved height of greatness and excellence, but are not privileged because of our obsession with the APC and PDP. However, when we all- irrespective of differences, shift our attention beyond political parties and look beyond the present dominant political structures, every candidate will have an equal opportunity to be elected.
Fellow Nigerians, for far too long, our leadership choices have been influenced by religion, ethnicity, political affiliations and the likes, and over the years, these criteria have failed us repeatedly and woefully; but now is the time to focus on the capacity, competence and character of whosoever is willing and ready to govern us than on any of those criteria.
Those that think this is not achievable should hold and watch it happen- it will be demanding and may take time, but it will happen!

God Bless Nigeria

Before APC Scam Us Again. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

In the words of the 34th President of the United States of America- Dwight Eisenhower, "If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power." This statement best describes the ruling party- All Progressive Congress (APC), as it stands now.
Yes, politicians will say whatever it takes to get elected. Every one of them swears that they will be less corrupt, and less corruptible, than the lot in power. Eventually, when they get elected and sit on their various ambitious seats, they forget some of their promises, they even deny some- as President Buhari and the APC have repeatedly done, while they ignore the rest promises.
The time has come again, the season is here once more- the season of deceits, scams, lies and theft- when politicians say whatever we want to hear just to get our votes, when they do what they feel we want to see just to get our supports, but it has become incumbent on us, not to fall for that again. They tricked us once, shame on them. If we let them trick us again, shame on us!

Buhari: Is The Honeymoon Still On? By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

In spite of the failing campaign promises, after over 50% into the administration and 104 days in London on a medication vacation for an undisclosed illness, Muhammadu Buhari, the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, returned to the country where he has been since 7th May 2017, to a rosy reception.
That was the fourth time President Buhari had embarked on vacation and transferred power to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, his Vice, since the two leaders were inaugurated on 29th May 2015. The first was in 5th February 2016, when the President embarked on a five-day vacation; the second was in 6th June 2016, when President Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom for treatment of what the Presidency described as ear infection; the third was in 19th January 2017, when he went for another medical vacation to London for what his office described as a "routine medical check-ups."
However, as usual, and expected, his return was not without a jamboree, funfair and celebration as citizens- well-wishers, politicians, family and friends came out against all odds to welcome him back home with so much joy and happiness. It was a moment of relief and sign of hope for Nigerians that have long awaited the return of President Buhari.

Dear President Buhari, For The Love Of Yourself And Country, Please Resign. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi.

Your Excellency Sir,
First and foremost, congratulations to you, the Chibok community, and to all well-meaning Nigerians on the successful release of additional 82 #ChibokGirls from the hands of their abductor, Boko Haram. At least, at this point, no one can genuinely fault your commitment to securing the release of the girls and reuniting them with their loved ones. It is a huge success for the country and for your administration.
Meanwhile, early this year, precisely 19th January 2017, you travelled out of the country to the United Kingdom in what your handlers called a 10-day vacation to have some rest. However, you ended up staying in London for about two months, during which several political leaders visited you and gave us the assurance that you were “Hale and Hearty”, “Fit as Fiddle” and that you were only resting.
Unfortunately, it turns out that you were really sick as you hinted during a short address to the nation when you returned. You admitted that he had never been this “sick” in your entire life and further revealed that you had a “blood transfusion” in the course of your treatment in the United Kingdom. This shows the gravity of your illness.

President Buhari Is Not Fighting Corruption, He`s Only Looking For Money! By Ogundana Michael Rotim

A purportedly incorruptible President will not appoint and keep an allegedly corruptible Secretary General to the Federation on his team and pretend like all is well- forget about the Kangaroo investigation by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). Well, that`s a discussion for another time.
It is on record that fighting corruption- a serious endemic that has left our nation battered and shattered, was one of the primary reasons why President Buhari was elected, asides for battling the Boko Haram Insurgency.
However, events unfolding since President Buhari came on board after the general elections in 2015, (that saw the incumbent president- Dr Goodluck Jonathan, voted out of office), confirm that as against expectations, President Buhari is not fighting corruption, but more keen on getting money to fund his campaign promises through loot recovery and that is exactly what he has been doing.
Nigeria, since independence have suffered from a total breakdown of law and order in the hands of its leaders, who technically legitimized corruption- squandered and laundered its resources and left its citizenry to the mercy of aids. However, with high hopes and aspirations President Buhari was elected to do the needful- to clean up the system, go after looters, prosecute them and in the process recover the loot and make them pay severely for their unlawful actions.

Nigeria: Strong Individuals, Weak Institutions And A Broken Society. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi.

Last Saturday, we woke up to the news that Audu Maikori, the CEO of Chocolate City Entertainment, was arrested in Lagos; by a team of policemen attached to the Inspector-General Monitoring And Intelligence Team and was immediately transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. His arrest, however, was not disconnected from the series of posts and comments he shared on his social media pages about the Southern Kaduna massacre. The information turned out to be untrue, prompting a retraction and apology from him to the general public.
Well, the piece of today is neither about Audu Maikori nor about his actions, but about the scenarios surrounding his arrest and release. It is about our institutions!
I am a strong proponent of strong institutions as being key to our development and sustainability. Pathetically, we are a nation of strong and powerful individuals with weak and fragile institutions in a broken society.

Dear President Goodluck Jonathan You Cannot Reformat Our Memories. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

Dear President Jonathan, I never thought I was going to write to you again since your eviction from the “Rock” because it was no longer worth it. But seeing how ardently you are trying to invade our memories with “Ebele-Trojan Virus”, in a bid to reformatting it- clearing off and replacing existing data, in an attempt to rewrite history thereby playing on our intelligence, it became increasingly incumbent on me to pen this short note to you.
Mr. President, in a speech you delivered at the Annual Gala Dinner of Nigerian Lawyers Association in the US.., you said and I quote: “Under my watch, not a single Nigerian was sent to prison because of anything they wrote or said about me or the Administration that I headed.”  You must have forgotten about the military attack on Nigerian newspapers that happened right under your watch on the 6th and 7th June 2014. An event that saw Soldiers seized and in some cases destroyed thousands of copies of several newspapers including Leadership, The Nation, and Punch Newspapers. The general distribution centre for all newspapers in Area 1, Abuja, was also sealed by soldiers and several newspapers circulation staff were also harassed and detained in the process.

Nigeria at 56: Crawling from Self-Governance To Good Governance. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

Nigeria is not 56 years old- it is a journey of 56 years post-colonial rule and every Independence Day affords us the opportunity to remember the struggles of our founders- their devotion and sacrifices for an independent nation. On Saturday, October 1, 1960, Nigeria became an independent nation. What follows was Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa's speech delivered at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos at the Independence Day Ceremony. In his speech, he said: “All too soon it has become evident that for us, independence implies a great deal more than self-government”. Unfortunately, 56 years on, we are yet to experience "The Great Deal" Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa talked about in his speech.
No doubts, it is a good thing to be independent- it means a lot more than just not being under the control of a colonial master. It is more than the desire and passion for self-governance- it is a journey towards Good Governance. Unfortunately, at 56, Nigeria is still crawling towards attaining this.
In this article, I do not mean to recount our woes and problems, however, it is my intention to draw our attention to the fact that we have by ourselves refused to transcend from the state of self-governance to a height of good governance.

Rio 2016, Nigeria And The Gold Medal Of Shame. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

The 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro are over and yet a country as big as Nigeria comes home with just a bronze medal. This time, there were additional disgraceful actions and inactions from the Nigerian Football Federation and the sports ministry before and during the biggest sporting events in the world.
Where do we start from? Is it from the social media plea by Nigerian athletes to crowd- source fund to find their way to Rio? Or from the Dream Team VI that got stranded in Atlanta, Georgia only to arrive Rio few hours before their first match? Perhaps from the opening ceremony where Nigerians filed out while dressed in their tracksuits? Should we start from the fact that Mikel John Obi, had to use his personal money- $4,000, to ensure that the Nigeria Olympic team did not miss their flight to Salvador while players and officials of the Dream Team VI, were held to ransom in Sao Paulo, over unpaid bills incurred by additional officials? Or from the fact that Nigeria's Olympic kit only turned up a few days to the end of the Olympics after most athletes had completed their events? I am quite sure there are many more embarrassing moments unknown to the public.

#PMB365Days: Change, In Dire Need Of Speed! By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

I find it increasingly difficult to write about the 1st year anniversary of President Buhari`s administration, not because I care less about what becomes of his administration, but I am suspicious of how much I have begun to rage against what he has and has not done. I see reactions in some people around me, this same feeling about him.
There are lots of articles - different groups and individuals with divergent opinions and impressions about his 1st year in office. Various polls have rated him in different areas, but the fact is, his first-year scorecard seems below expectation considering the hype in which the administration sold itself prior to its election.
The Buhari`s administration has come under pressure from various quarters- with support here and hostility there; some saying he has done really well while others complained bitterly about how terrible his administration is. Friends are torn apart in the debate; comrades are not left out, while critics joined with the hashtag #PMB365WastedDays. But make no mistakes; whether you are for Buhari or against him, whether you believe he has a good scorecard or a terrible one- one thing is common, this administration lacks speed.

Dear President Buhari, The Last Time I checked, You Are Still The Minster Of Petroleum Resource. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

Your Excellency Sir, I write you this piece not as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, but as the minister of petroleum resources appointed by yourself on the 11th of November, 2015.
You seem to have forgotten that you are the minister of petroleum resources and may have completely relinquished your responsibilities to the minister of state of petroleum resources- Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who to me, to a reasonable extent has been up and doing.
You seem to have neglected the fact that you are directly answerable to Nigerians as the Minister of petroleum resources, and owe it to Nigerians to make the product readily available and affordable.
As a reminder of what you already know- the fuel scarcity has fully gripped major cities in the country and contributing negatively to an economy that is still struggling to pick its stand.

Dear Mr. Femi Adesina; Your Vulgarity Is Fast Becoming Unbearable, Take Heed Lest You Fall. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

Dear Mr. Femi Adesina; I bring to you this passage from the Holy Bible: Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he falls- 1 Corinthians 10:12”. That is my message for you today. Meanwhile, I will try as much as I can, to keep it brief but concise, lest you call me a wailing wailer.
Sir, may I remind you that your appointment into your present position came on the 31st May 2015, you resumed officially into office on the 9th June, 2105 and on the 1st July, 2015, barely a month after your resumption into the President Buhari`s led administration as the special adviser on media & publicity to the president, you coined the phrase- “wailing wailers”.

Ese Oruru, Yinusa Dahiru And The Tragedy Of A Divided Nation. By Ogundana Michael Rotimi.

We may not have been together if not for the 1914 amalgamation. But since the artificial wedding took place over a century ago, it is quite surprising how and why we remain divided in the face of various integration plans and programs to keep us united.
Few weeks ago when the Ese Oruru saga broke out, it again showed to the world how divided a nation amalgamated over a hundred years ago is. The Ese Oruru saga, prove once again that we have only been struggling to live in harmony with one another and always looking for the slightest opportunity to go against each other.
Worse as our division is, we are not only divided along regional or ethnical line, but we are so divided along numerous lines and that only calls for concerns for a nation dreaming of development and prosperity. One wonders how we have managed to stay together as a nation in the midst of these divisions all these years.

Let`s Talk Frankly, All Lives Matter! By Ogundana Michael Rotimi

You must have noticed that it has gradually become a norm that we almost completely overlook and feel very much less concerned when there is a terrorist attack or violence that claimed the lives of innocent people especially in some particular part of the country. For the government, all it does is to wait for about 24/48hrs before condemning the attack just casually and mildly sympathize with the victims or with their families and loved ones. For the people, all they say is- “Eh yah… Na wa o…” and move on. While those on the social media especially Twitter, continue their normal political racketeering and sides taking and showing fewer concerns for the victims of the incidents as long as they are not directly or indirectly a victim. Worse as it were, our media houses only report the attack like a flash. Like- “BREAKING NEWS: Boko Haram attacks Maiduguri”. And to me it appears like, don`t worry it`s nothing serious, people died though but no big deal…
